Around and Around Whirligig

Hal Store, Sinop, 2016

Miné’s own Walnut Whirligig designs and those made by kids and mums in Spinning were crafted as cultural representative objects, Gifts of Sinop, and were exhibited in Hal Store at the end of the Design for Community Based Sustainable Development Workshop that Miné participated in during the September of 2015.

The opening of the exhibition hosted the local governmental delegates and the people of Sinop. The way the locals connected and were able to call on their childhood memories by spinning and playing with walnut whirligigs was clearly visible.

Miné’s creative process for this exhibition started when she found a walnut whirligig, which was an anonymous toy from Sinop’s local culture, and she redesigned it as new whirligigs for local people to enjoy. The photographs undoubtedly depict how an object/design can make a joyful connection with people or vice versa...
